Everyone starts to experience changes in their eyes in their 40’s. This condition is called presbyopia and it involves a decreased ability to focus on objects that are nearthe eyes and unfortunately it happens tomost of us. Activities like reading, sewing, computer work, shaving and even applying make up may become increasingly difficult.
While there’s no way to reverse the effects of presbyopia, we can combat it with the DEFINITY™ Progressive Bifocal from Essilor. Whether you golf, hike, play tennis, or just enjoy taking a stroll during your lunch break, DEFINITY™ is the ideal progressive lens for you.
- DEFINITY uses patented DUAL ADD® Technology to create a progressive lens with the least amount of distortion, which lets you see through more of the lens.
- DEFINITY is a progressive lens whose far, near, intermediate and unique GROUND VIEW ADVANTAGE™ more closely mimics your natural vision.
- DEFINITY works for those with an active life – golfing, biking, hiking and
tennis.
As spring approaches, you are probably thinking about spending more time outdoors and maybe even venturing on or near the water. You are ever conscious of the dangers of ultraviolet radiation (UV), so you are prepared. You have a hat to protect your hair, sunscreen to protect your skin and lip balm to protect your lips. Are you ready for an afternoon of fun in the sun? Maybe; maybe not!
Fashion aside, sunglasses serve a true function - they protect your eyes from the harmful rays produced by the sun. Your sunglasses should block 99-100% of the full UV spectrum to 400 nanometers. Just because they are tinted very dark doesn’t necessarily mean they offer adequate protection. Some labels may say, “UV absorption up to 400 nm” which is the same as 100% UV absorption. Also, labels that say “Special Purpose” or “Meets ANSI UV Requirements” mean the glasses block at least 99% of UV rays. Those labeled “Cosmetic” block about 70% of the UV rays. If there is no label, don’t buy the sunglasses.
If you are going to be near water or light-colored sand, you may double or triple your exposure to UV. Both water and sand reflect the sun’s rays and increase your risk for the problems associated with UV. Should you worry if you are only out at the lake a few times a year? Yes. UV radiation affects the eyes over your entire lifetime. Many occasional weeks of fun in the sun, spread out over a lifetime, will increase your risk of cataracts and other eye problems, so you should always wear UV-protected sunglasses when you go out. Since UV is cumulative over their lifetime, young children should also protect their eyes with sunglasses.
PineCone Vision Center has launched its KIDS CLUB for all children up to 12 years of age. These children now receive a Free packet of goodies which contain a T-shirt and coloring/activity book along with educational materials on the importance of wearing their eyeglasses. Along with replacement up to 1 year for any scratched lenses. Also now available is the loss replacement option which can be added to any Kids Clubs purchase for $35, which offers a one time loss replacement to frames and/or lenses. We also have the honor of placing their photos on our “My Specs are Spectacular” picture wall.
