InfantSee is a no-cost public health program developed by former President Jimmy Carter, where PineCone Vision Center donates their professional eye care services for infants 6-12 month of age. Doctors Colatrella and Hinkemeyer were one of the first in the state to sign up for
the program and they have examined over 60 infants since it was launched one year ago.
Visual development is most dramatic between 6 and 12 months of age and early detection can prevent and help reduce the threat of serious vision impairments.
Vision disorders are the fourth most common disability in the United States and the most prevalent handicapping condition during childhood. Below the age of 6, only about 14 percent are likely to have had an eye and vision examinations.
For more information on the program, please contact PineCone Vision Center at 320-258-3915 or log onto www.InfantSee.org
At PineCone Vision Center, we provide comprehensive and preventive children’s eye exams. Our doctors are trained InfantSEE® providers, which gives them the special skills required to detect the early warning signs of your child’s vision problems, helping us catch imbalances before your child d
evelops more serious eye conditions.
It is especially true that parents are concerned about their children’s vision and eye care health, and it is equally important that you screen your children for eye problems at a young age, and on a regular basis.
If you notice your child squinting, covering or closing one eye to see, rubbing her eyes repeatedly, tilting his head to one side, notice redness or tearing in the eye, notice one or both eyes turning in or out, or have a family history of “lazy eye” or “thick glasses”, please call us immediately to schedule a children’s eye exam today.
PineCone Vision Center is now specializing in low vision rehabilitation care to examine, treat and manage patients with visual impairments not fully treatable by medical, surgical or conventional eyewear or contact lenses. Treatment plans include extensive eye examinations, prescription glasses, specialized optical systems, therapeutic filters, non-optical options, and/or video magnification, and the prescription of rehabilitation therapy to effectively maximize visual functioning for activities of daily living.
Are your eyes dry? Do you frequently complain that your eyes itch, burn or feel like something is physically stuck in the eye itself?
If so, you may have Dry Eye Syndrome, which is a chronic lack of moisture and lubrication in the eye.
PineCone Vision Center is a designated Dry Eye Treatment Center, recognized by Allergan pharmaceuticals as the only Dry Eye Treatment Center in central Minnesota.
We are also proud to offer RESTASIS ophthalmic emulsion prescription eye drops to promote increased tear production, relieve your dry eye condition and help your eyes feel more comfortable and lubricated throughout the day.
Feel free to consult with one of our doctors if you suffer from chronically dry eyes or want to know what types of relief you may obtain for your dry eye condition.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world. Fortunately there has been a rapid evolution in treatment over the past few years the we at PineCone Vision Center can provide for our patients.
Cataracts are an opacity or clouding of the normally crystalline lens of the eye, caused by the natural aging process, metabolic changes, injury, various forms of radiation, toxic chemicals and certain drugs. The leading cause of vision loss among adults age 60 or older, cataracts impair vision, making everyday activities increasingly difficult.
In simple terms, a cataract is usually part of the normal aging process that changes the natural, clear lens of the eye into a cloudy, opaque structure that inhibits or diminishes the passage of light to the retina. The condition can be compared to a window that is frosted or "fogged" with steam.

If you or someone you love begins having symptoms such as: blurring of vision, sensitivity to light, declining night vision or fading or yellowing of colors, schedule an eye examine and let one of PineCone Vision Center's trained eye specialists provide the treatment needed.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the US. In fact, the disease is often called the “sneak thief of sight”, because the most common types have no symptoms until your vision is already damaged. Now, with the latest technologies, doctors can screen for the disease at its earliest stages. PineCone Vision Center suggests that you schedule an appointment with one of our doctors any of the following warning signs become applicable in your day to day life.

Warning Signs of Glaucoma
- Your are over 45 and have not had your eyes examined regularly .
- Someone in your family has a history of
Glaucoma .
- You have abnormally high intraocular pressure
- You are of African descent .

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease associated with aging that gradually destroys sharp, central vision. Central vision is needed for seeing objects clearly and for common daily tasks such as reading and driving. AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail.
In some cases, AMD advances so slowly that people notice little change in their vision. In others, the disease progresses faster and may lead to a loss of vision in both eyes. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 years of age and older.
The specialists at PineCone Vision Center can provide several treatment options including simple changes in lifestyle. Schedule an appointment to see which option is best for you.
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease, which causes a thinning of the cornea, the clear front surface of the e
ye. As keratoconus progresses, the quality of one's vision deteriorates and contact lenses or glasses no longer become a satisfactory solution for most people.
For many, corneal transplant may be the only option, but the eye care professionals at PineCone Vision Center continually research new methods of treatment.
Ocular or "retinal" migraines are associated with a transiently decreased blood supply to the eye, causing loss of vision in that eye which can last for minutes to hours. If the migraines are severe or happen rather frequently, there is a risk of permanent visual loss. Although there is no effective treatment specific for this type of migraine, it is important for you to come to PineCone Vision Center so our doctors can make sure that it isn't something else like a blocked artery in the neck or temporal arteritis which are potentially treatable.
The eyes are one of the most sensitive and vulnerable organs in the body. Airborne allergens and other particles can land directly on the surface of the eye, causing irritation and redness. Although tears constantly wash the eyes, they can’t always keep out allergens like pollen or pet dander. Because of this, allergies that flare up in the eyes, also known as ocular allergies, are common and on the rise.
The most frequent allergic triggers include: pollen, pet hair or dander, dust and some medicines. There are also some triggers that irritate the eyes but are not true allergies, such as: cigarette smoke, perfume and diesel exhaust. Common symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis are: redness and itching under the eyelid, excessive watering and swelling of the eyeball.
If you have ocular allergies or any other kind of allergic disease, the most effective treatment is prevention. Try to avoid the allergens that trigger symptoms. For many, this is easier said than done, especially if your triggers are airborne, such as pollen.
When ocular allergies get out of control, there are several eye drops that may help relieve symptoms. Topical medications like antihistamines, vasoconstrictors and tears can help alleviate the symptoms. In acute cases, steroid eye drops can be utilized on a short term basis.
There are more options than ever before to help treat eye allergies. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of treatment depends on several factors including environmental conditions, what medications you are on, which therapies you have tried in the past and how bothered you are by the symptoms. The best way to find out which therapy is right for you is to have a complete eye examination.
